what is mtd?

Self Assessment 2.0

because HMRC loves drama

HMRC now wants quarterly digital updates from the self-employed, with four filings a year through approved software to cut errors and close gaps.

who will mtd affect?

it's happening whether you like it or not

Making Tax Digital means quarterly reporting. One return becomes four. Hit the threshold and you’re in.

APRIL 2026: THE FIRST WAVE

Self-employed people earning over £50,000 must join Making Tax Digital, without delay.

APRIL 2027: LOWER THE BAR

The threshold drops to £30,000, pulling more self-employed people into MTD.

APRIL 2028: NEARLY all IN

Income above £20,000? You must join Making Tax Digital and file quarterly to stay compliant.

TURNOVER, NOT PROFIT

Thresholds are based on total income before expenses, and they combine SA and earnings.

IT’S COMING WhETHER YOU’RE READY OR NOT

Making Tax Digital is HMRC's push to digitise the tax system.

core requirements

HOW DOES it WORK?

Quarterly data, clean logs, year-end file

Keep digital records

You must maintain digital accounting records in software or spreadsheets. Paper records will no longer meet the legislative requirements. You must record the amount, category, and date of income and expenses digitally for each source separately.

Submit quarterly updates

Taxpayers must send HMRC quarterly income and expense summaries, simple totals, not full returns.

  • 6 April to 5 July: Due 7 August
  • 6 July to 5 October: Due 7 November
  • 6 October to 5 January: Due 7 February
  • 6 January to 5 April: Due 7 May

Each trade or property needs its own quarterly update, so one trader with rentals files eight a year.

Final declaration at year-end

After submitting your four quarterly updates, you must enter any additional income such as bank interest, employment income, and capital gains. The filing deadline remains 31 January following the end of the tax year.
